You know what they say……”Fashionably late…..”

Yeah. That’s what we’ll call this post!!!

While I was in Vegas for WPPI this year, I was SUPER stoked to have the opportunity to learn some new lighting techniques from the Bui Brothers, Lan and Vu!! These guys (while also known for being awesome) are known for being pretty dang close to genius when it comes to easy and dramatic lighting set-ups!

We started off down the street from the MGM, taking shots in front of New York, New York (yeah…I think that’s the hotel with the roller coaster!!).

The beautiful husband wife photo team, Matt and Stevi from Avery House Creative, decided that the day could be well spent in front of the camera for a change!! We started off using natural light and really playing with depth of field for some basic head shots.

Pretty quick, though, it started to sprinkle. We, being the wussy photographers that we are, scrambled with our equipment and ran under the nearest bridge. (Don’t worry….I checked my camera. The sudden onslaught of incredibly light sprinkles didn’t do any damage…)

We started practicing with a two light set up. Metering off the background, and filling in the models with small flash units.

Since we are photographers, we tend to get ancy pretty quick, so while one lighting set up was going on, we tackled our other model, Faye!! Since the lights were being occupied, these were a more natural set-up.

AND then the models switched!! :D (Yeah…we played “model roullete” well that day. HEY!! When in Vegas….)

The wind started to pick up, and the chill started to seep in (What was WRONG with Vegas that day??? It was freezing when it should have been warm!!!), so we all hustled into the nearest hotel/casino/thing. We found a HUGE white hallway that was perfect for setting up some fun lighting.

We had a bit of distraction in the form of Grace‘s handsome little man…..

Everyone say AWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! I don’t think he was ACTUALLY commissioned to be a Bui Brothers model….but hhe did an EXCELLENT job!!!

Back to the lighting……the Bui Brothers showed us an AWESOME lighting set up that I can’t wait to use on some of my Teens this year!!! How dramatic is this????

Ahem……and can I just say? RED COUCH-Y BENCHY THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

All in all, learning from these guys was a real treat. I can’t wait to test it out on my own clients!!!! Errr….not that I am calling my clients guinea pigs or anything. 0_0

I love the shot of all of the photographers trying to capture the kiddo. I find myself wondering how difficult it was to get any shots with so many others vying for a spot.
